School's Out for Summer!

June 04, 2025
"School's out for summer!" If you sang that song along with me in your head in your best Alice Cooper voice, you are dating yourself just like I am with that 1970's reference. But the refrain rings true that summer is upon us and with that come a few months of endless possibility and fun. Whether it's the big family vacation, loading up the car to go visit family, or a short weekend getaway, we all want to take a break from the day-to-day grind and go make memories and experience life. Reality can set in, though, once we get home and the bills start coming due. So how can we both plan for these adventures while at the same time not deter from focusing on the future? With the right financial planning, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: meaningful experiences today without jeopardizing your long-term goals for tomorrow.
Plan your travel just like you do your retirement
It can often be difficult to prioritize competing goals like planning for vacations and travel, while at the same time knowing that you also have to save for long-term goals like retirement and children's education. But, hopefully, with these tips, preparing for a stress-free vacation can become a reality without jeopardizing your future goals.
  • Create a travel budget early
Look at your travel costs and budget like any other goal. Determine what you want to do, figure out the expected financial commitment (transportation, lodging, food, entertainment, and a little bit extra for unexpected costs), and start saving on a monthly basis for this dedicated goal. This will hopefully help avoid the entire trip going on the credit card and the accompanying stress of paying the bill.
  • Focus on the size of the experiences, not the price tag
The memories you and your family will more than likely remember, cherish, and talk about in the future at family gatherings will come from the shared moments and not whether you stayed in a 5-star resort versus a small ramshackle cabin on the lake. Focus on creating quality time together vs. needing the best of everything.
  • Leverage your Financial Plan
If you are already working with us here at Rally Wealth and Benefits, ask for assistance in mapping out what adding an annual travel or vacation budget to your larger, more comprehensive financial plan. We can work with you to determine what size of budget is feasible and comfortable for you, provide "what-if" scenarios that will show how making one decision over another can impact your overall plan, and allow you to make decisions and value judgements from a position of education and confidence.
  • Tomorrow is promised to no one
A solid financial plan isn't just about having a secure future in retirement, it's also about living for today, making memories with family, friends, and loved ones, and enjoying the fruits of your labor. If regular travel is a priority for you, diligent planning to align both your current goals while not sacrificing your future ones can be accomplished with the proper planning.
